homeschool diploma

Ok, I found a place that specializes in diplomas for homeschoolers. You can get them in packages or individually. My oldest is only in 8th grade so I have some time, but I'd love to help anyone interested. I'm still hoping to put together a group no matter how small. I started this blog so that if there's anyone in my area looking for help, support, classes, etc. we could get together. I think my next step will be to see if I can get the homeschool rep at the school board office to pass out flyers for me.

On a side note, I've been trying to get ahold of a place for my daughter to volunteer. I found a horse rescue here in Ft White, FL but they aren't insured and volunteers have to be 18 or older. It's sad to me that we live in a society that has become over run with lawsuits. When a child is interested in giving their time to help a charity and we can't let them, how long before that desire is squashed? We are becoming so obsessed with self-preservation. How sad and how disappointing!

Great Granny's pound cake

Tonight at YW Jenna is supposed to bring something passed down from an ancestor. Just recently we got a copy of my Great Granny's pound cake recipe so we just made it and put in the oven. I remember eating it when I was little and thinking it was heaven on earth! I'm a little sad that I won't get any of this one! It brought back tons of memories like first Sundays at Granny and Pa's, playing ghost in the graveyard and thinking Bill, Nate, Danny and David were the scariest people alive. I never could get up the nerve to go to the front of Great Granny's house by myself! I remember the big fires Pa used to build and how fun it was to run up, throw in some leaves to listen to them crackle and run off again. All this from a pound cake! I guess the weekend I just spent alone with my family helped a little. Speaking of that.....I had a great time. It was kind of a family drama that I won't get into on here, but it was a good kind of drama. And it really sparked some good memories. Maybe the pound cake memories are just icnig on the cake!

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

Well, today is kind of a busy day where we won't get much done. Don't you just love days like that? We have to do school work, of course, and Jenna and Haley have chorus at the high school, but mostly we have to get this house cleaned up! I was out of town for the weekend so the kids turned the house into a pig pen! Then Sunday we spent the day at church and picked up a little. Yesterday we tried to have a fun day for Braden's birthday with an impromptu trip to chuck e cheese, so today.....its time to tackle this mess. I'm hoping to get with someone about a cooking class today. I have a cousin who makes the most beautiful cakes and loves to cook. I'm hoping I can talk her into doing a class for homeschoolers. Anyway, I'll let you know how that goes!

MLK Day Braden's birthday

Well, this year Braden's birthday falls on MLK Day. Neat huh? I think we'll take the day off and maybe just have a quick review of what Martin Luther King contributed to our country. The man with the dream. I often wonder if we're living his dream yet. I don't think so. Not because black and white people live differently from each other, but because I don't think things like affirmative action is what he was meant by being equal. I think he'd just want us to live side by side, advancing in our schools, jobs and our lives in general on our merits.

Anyway, we'll celebrate Braden's birthday today, but save the party for the weekend. Freddie isn't home and I don't want him to miss it. Maybe we'll just go to McDonalds to eat and play. They really do grow up so fast. When he was born it was so sweet, but a little scary. He is our 5th child and when he was born he had pnuemonia. He was taken to the NICU right away and stayed there for a week. Which really was amazing! He started out as the baby in the NICU on the greatest amount of oxygen but also the baby whose oxygen was decreased the quickest. A miracle! When I brought him home all the other kids couldn't wait to get their turn to hold him. It was so fun. Having a new baby usually is! Happy Birthday Braden!!!

Homeschooling in Lake City, FL

I'm a homeschooling mom living in Lake City, FL. I've been looking for an active homeschool group in the area and haven't been able to find one. So I'm going to create one! I'm looking for interest in this type of thing in our area, so if you think you might like to be a part of it, let me know! I'm trying to set up classes for my children, and anyone else's, such as cooking, music, drama, computers, science, etc. If you or anyone you know might be interested in teaching a class please let me know. The classes would require a fee for a pre-determined number of classes. I'd like to eventually be able to provide a graduation ceremony for our older kids! Wouldn't that be great! I'd love it if everyone interested would leave me a comment. The more interest I find, the lower the cost. So please spread the word!
